Ferns

Ferns draws inspiration from the iconic silver ferns of Aotearoa New Zealand, translating their sweeping fronds and intricate veins into a sculptural, carved form. The piece opens upward like unfurling koru, its jagged rim echoing the natural rhythm of leaf tips in mid-growth. Layers of hand-carving reveal deep linear patterns, accented with subtle washes of copper oxide that settle into the grooves, mimicking the cool underside of a fern catching light in the forest canopy.

The vessel celebrates the resilience and symbolism of the silver fern-a marker of identity, nature, and renewal-while honouring MacChoi Pottery's tactile approach to surface and form. Both functional and evocative, it invites the viewer to consider the delicate architecture of the natural world and the stories held within its patterns.
