What is so special about Ailsa Craig granite?

Some of my work are made using granite waste from Ailsa Craig — the legendary wee island in the Firth of Clyde! 🪨🏴

Kays Scotland is the only company licensed to mine Ailsa Craig granite. When they cut and grind the stone for curling stones, they’re left with a slurry that would normally go to landfill… until now.

I’ve been experimenting to turn this waste into something meaningful, and I’m chuffed to say that I'm making progress with a clay body and a number of glazes contain recycled Ailsa Craig granite. So aye — there’s literally a bit of Scotland in every these pieces!
